An ongoing series that I keep working on from time to time, ‘the body-landscape metaphor revisited’ questions the male gaze & the pornotopia associated with it. Historically, the earth has been associated with feminine attributes, such as fertility and passivity. This association, combined with the body as landscape metaphor often reiterates the idea of the female body as passive and receptive spaces. The drawings subvert this traditional approach where the explorer of the landscape is essentially male. Here, the gaze is inward and that of
a female exploring herself or the self in relation to the surrounding. She is not disillusioned about her scenario. Rather, she is capable of adapting to the diverse range of scenarios and the emotional ecstasies & upheavals that they cause. This adaptability is by no means passive in nature. It is courageous, resilient and definitely not compromising.
While drawing the human form on the graph paper often I reflect on several conceptual and formal concerns. Am I inflicting the grid or geometry of the graph paper on the human form? Is it some kind of trying to fit in? Or is it a negotiation between the organic and the man-made? These artistic problems are of utmost importance to me.
